Learning Objectives
- Understand that orbital paths are shaped by the balance between a body's forward velocity and the gravitational pull of a central mass.
- Observe Kepler's Second Law: A planet moves fastest at perihelion (closest approach) and slowest at aphelion.
- Understand the concept of Escape Velocity and how it scales with the mass of the central body.
- Discover that in a Binary System, bodies orbit a shared center of mass (barycenter), causing stars to "wobble".
How to Run the Activity
Preparation
Print out the Orbital Mechanics: Mission Log PDF for each student. Ensure students have devices with web browsers.
Distribute Link
Go to the Student Access tab in this portal to generate a direct link. Share this link on your classroom board or LMS.
Gameplay & Analysis
Students will independently work through Missions 1 to 4. For each mission, they must discover the correct slider parameters to beat the level, record their "Winning Parameters", and then use the vector visuals (Gravity and Velocity arrows) to answer the conceptual physics questions.
Class Debrief
Use the Answer Key tab to review the physics concepts. Pay special attention to the Final Reflection regarding mass equivalence.
